Medicines and Supplements: The Whole List Matters

A national study of Americans ages 62–85 found:

• 36% regularly used five or more prescription medicines.

• 17% regularly used five or more supplements.

• More than 1 in 5 used a combination identified as potentially causing a serious interaction.

The study did not prove that these combinations actually harmed people. It showed that possible interactions remain common.

THE HEALTHSPAN TAKEAWAY

Prescription medicines, store-bought products, vitamins, and supplements can affect one another.

Keep one complete list of everything you take and review it with your doctor or pharmacist. Do not stop or change anything without professional guidance.
